Keep a notebook for your collection

The details you record today can matter years from now.

A collection becomes easier to understand when each object has a simple record. A spreadsheet, paper notebook or folder of photographs can work equally well. Pick something you will actually maintain.

Capture the basics

Record the purchase date, source, amount paid, dimensions and visible marks. Photograph the front, back and any damage. Keep receipts with the entry and separate what you can verify from what a seller suggested.

Describe without guessing

Use observations such as “blue stamped mark on base” rather than assigning an uncertain maker or date. Add references when you learn more, and preserve earlier notes so you can see how your understanding changed.

Make a useful backup

Keep a second copy of digital records somewhere separate. Avoid publishing private seller details or photographs of valuable objects together with your home address. Good records support enjoyment as well as future conversations with a specialist.
