A better first flea-market find

Start with curiosity, a budget and a closer look.

A crowded market can make everything feel like a discovery. Before you go, choose a small spending limit and one category you enjoy: postcards, books, tools or decorative ceramics. You can admire an object without buying it.

Look beyond the first impression

Ask permission to pick up a piece. Check its base, edges, hinges and seams in good light. Note chips, repairs and missing parts. Bring measurements if the object needs to fit a particular place at home.

Ask what is known

A seller may have a useful story, but a story is not proof of age or authenticity. Ask whether there are receipts, maker marks or other records. Photograph details with permission and compare them later if you are unsure.

Leave room to walk away

Buy something because you want to live with it, not because of a promised resale profit. For expensive pieces, seek an independent specialist before committing. Leaving empty-handed is a perfectly good market day.
