Pause before polishing

Sometimes the best first treatment is no treatment.

An old object's surface can carry clues about how it was made and used. Polishing, repainting or soaking may remove those clues or damage a fragile material. When you are uncertain, pause.

Identify the material

Metal plating, painted wood and glazed ceramic need different care. Look for reliable collection-care guidance for the specific material. Do not test harsh chemicals or abrasive tools on an unidentified piece.

Store thoughtfully

Choose a stable place away from direct sunlight, heat sources and accidental knocks. Support fragile objects securely and keep paper items clean and dry. Avoid food use for vintage containers whose materials or finish are unknown.

Know when to ask

For valuable, sentimental or unstable objects, consult a qualified conservator. Record the condition before any work. You do not need to make an old object look new to appreciate it.
